Hope for the Future: Bernard Loeffke, a documentary produced by the International Communication Center of Chengdu Radio & Television, tells the story of retired U.S. Army Major General Bernard Loeffke, who devoted his life to studying Chinese and traditional Chinese medicine while fostering people-to-people exchanges between China and the United States. The production team traveled halfway around the world to capture the daily life of 92-year-old General Loeffke, bringing his remarkable story to the screen through a documentary lens and genuine compassion.
Marc Loeffke, son of General Loeffke, attended the screening and, after the screening, conveyed his father's heartfelt message to the audience on the enduring bonds of China-U.S. friendship: "U.S.-China relations are of vital importance, and any effort to strengthen ties between the two countries is immensely meaningful. Over the years, I have been fortunate to meet many Chinese friends. I hope that my story and this documentary can help foster new friendships."
During the discussion, veteran American documentary producer Jessica Stuart, founder and CEO of Long Story Short Media, shared her view that documentary filmmaking is, at its core, about putting people first, forging connections between them, and ultimately building understanding of others and of different cultures through emotional bonds. This, she said, is the cultural mission of documentary filmmaking. Anthony Argento, CEO of Rollin Studios, shared his experiences, including the challenges and opportunities involved in international co-productions, and said in an interview that he was interested in filming a panda documentary in Chengdu in the future.
The event also featured an immersive Chinese culture exhibition area, where intangible cultural heritage (ICH) bearers from Chengdu creatively integrated "Chinese language", "traditional Chinese medicine", and "Chinese cuisine" with "ICH-inspired cultural and creative works". The exhibition offered international visitors a direct glimpse into the diversity and vitality of China's traditional and contemporary culture.
