Swiss director Milo Rau poses in a giant bed which he uses as his office at the Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art in Vienna, Austria, on May 13, 2024. Swiss director Milo Rau is the new artistic director of the Vienna festival (Wiener Festwochen). Founded in 1951 to create a new image or Vienna, after the Nazi period, it positioned as a multidisciplinary art festival in the city, combining theatre, performance, dance, music and new art forms and it offers around a hundred events in the Austrian capital. The opening ceremony will take place on May 17, 2024 in front of Vienna's city hall and kicks off the 2024 edition that lasts until June 23, 2024. The Swiss director, who also heads the NTGent theater in the Belgian city of Ghent until June, has made his name as a provocateur, whether traveling to Moscow to stage the trial of Russian protest punk band Pussy Riot, or using children to play out the story of notorious Belgian pedophile Marc Dutroux, or reenacting a bloody massacre in the Amazon rainforest.
