Customers at a fish mongers buy the last catch, fished the day before, at the port of Capbreton, in southwestern France on January 22, 2025. The French government has temporarily banned almost all commercial fishing (8-meter-long boats or larger) in the Bay of Biscay to protect dolphins, much to the dismay of the industry. The month-long ban (January 22 to February 20 inclusive, and between 2024 and 2026) off the country's West coast -- the first since the end of World War II-- began on January 22, 2024, and applies to both French and foreign fishermen. It follows calls by environmental activists to protect the marine mammals, pointing to a surge in dolphin deaths on the Atlantic coast.
