Citrus growers in South Africa are nervous that duty-free and quota-free exports to the United States could be scrapped next year when Donald Trump takes office. Not only has Trump promised a 10 percent tariff on all imports to the US, preferential market access currently granted by the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) will soon be reviewed. Analysts say the legislation passed in 2000 and up for renewal in 2025 could be modified if not withdrawn altogether, which could have ramifications for companies and jobs across Africa. The fruits are among 1,800 products across 32 African countries benefiting from AGOA, with companies in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana reaping the most dollars in profits.
