Rapids sign free-agent M Feilhaber to one-year deal

The Colorado Rapids signed free-agent midfielder Benny Feilhaber on Friday, the team officially announced.

"Benny is a creative and experienced MLS veteran," Rapids general manager Padraig Smith said in a statement. "He is a player that will help balance our midfield and contribute to the scoresheet."

According to MLSsoccer.com, the contract is guaranteed for one season with the Rapids holding an option for 2020. Feilhaber, 33, reportedly will be paid just under this year's Designated Player threshold of $530,000. Last season with Los Angeles FC, Feilhaber made $625,000 in guaranteed compensation, according to the MLS Players Association.

Feilhaber made 32 starts in 34 regular-season matches for LAFC, recording three goals and six assists. The eight-year veteran has also played with the New England Revolution and spent five seasons with Sporting Kansas City, where he was part of the team's 2013 MLS Cup win as well as U.S. Open Cup titles in 2015 and '17.

Also Friday, the Rapids selected forward Andre Shinyashiki with the fifth pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft. Colorado gave up the 15th pick and $100,000 in general allocation money in a trade with the Chicago Fire to secure the Brazil native, who set several records in his four years at the University of Denver. Shinyashiki, a first-team All-American, scored a UD record of 51 goals in 83 appearances (67 starts) and also holds school career records for points (117) and game-winning goals (19).
