4 Vitamins That Make Your Skin Glow
Skin care products don't always come in expensive bottles. They can also come in the produce section of your favorite grocery store. A 99-cent tomato may be all you need to make your skin glow!

"We are what we eat," Dr. Vikram Khanna, a dermatologist at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, Illinois, told The Chicago Tribune. "Vitamins such as zinc, copper and vitamin C, along with amino acids from proteins, build our collagen and give it structural strength. They also contribute to our ability to heal the skin.

Here are five tips for beautiful skin. Find out how to get a complexion that glows--without spending a lot of time or money.

But here's the catch: Vitamins work best for skin care when they come from food instead of supplements. "A diet balanced in protein and critical nutrients and antioxidants derived from green vegetables will boost the immune functioning of the skin," says Khanna. "A balanced, healthy diet makes your skin healthy and beautiful."

Here are four vitamins and minerals that are essential for healthy, glowing skin, according to The Chicago Tribune:

1. Omega-3 fatty acids
Found in salmon, mackerel, lake trout, halibut, herring, oysters, sardines and albacore tuna, omega-3 fatty acids help your body retain moisture and keep skin supple.

2. Vitamin C
Found in red bell peppers, oranges, collard greens, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, strawberries, vitamin C is a major antioxidant that can minimize damage from free radicals, which can cause disease and accelerate the formation of wrinkles.

3. Lycopene
Tomatoes are packed with lycopene, which appears to help the skin's ability to withstand UV radiation from the sun. Lycopene is more readily absorbed by the body when it is cooked or processed. Examples: ketchup or tomato sauce.

4. Beta-carotene
The best source of beta-carotene is sweet potatoes. The body turns beta-carotene into vitamin A, which in turn allows proper moisture retention to skin. (Bonus: Sweet potatoes are also rich in vitamins C and E.)
