Top 10 Happiest Counties in the USA
If you have always dreamed of living in a happy place, move to New Jersey or Virginia. When SmartAsset.com ranked almost every county in the United States--from marriage rates to poverty to life expectancy--to determine the happiest, three of the top 10 were in New Jersey and two were in Virginia.
The top 10 happiest U.S. counties (2016): Why is Loudoun County, Virginia No. 1? For the second year in a row, this outer suburb of Washington, D.C. has topped the happiest county list. Both the unemployment rate and poverty rate are under 4 percent, and the poverty rate is the lowest of any major U.S. county. Loudoun County also has the fourth-highest income ratio at 2.5, which means the median income is more than twice the cost of living.

Data and methodology: To quantify the quality of life in U.S. counties, SmartAsset collected data on every U.S. county with a population of at least 50,000, which totaled 981 counties. For each of those counties, SmartAsset looked at eight metrics reflecting four factors key to a high regional quality of life: family stability, physical health, personal financial health and economic security.
