The Top 10 Landmarks in the World

This may be the ultimate travel bucket list: Visit the top 10 landmarks in the world.

TripAdvisor.com did the hard work and has identified the greatest travel attractions--from cathedrals to mosques and monuments to bridges. Two are in the United States.

From Angkor Wat in Cambodia to the Taj Mahal in India, see photos of the top 10 landmarks in the world.

Leading the list is Cambodia's Angkor Wat. First Hindu and later Buddhist, it is the largest religious monument in the world. Angkor Wat, which is now the country's prime tourist attraction, was built in the early 12th century by the Khmer King Suryavarman II as his state temple and eventual mausoleum. It has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on the national flag.

Coming in second is Machu Picchu in Peru, an estate constructed by the Incas around 1450 for the Inca emperor Pachacuti but abandoned by them about a century later at the time of the Spanish conquest. Often referred to as the "Lost City of the Incas," Machu Picchu is arguably the most familiar icon of Inca civilization. In 2007, Machu Picchu was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a worldwide Internet poll.
