Every high school senior knows the drill. A fat envelope means you were admitted to the college. A thin envelope means a rejection.
And for the class of 2020, the university sending out the most rejection notices was the Curtis Institute of Music, followed by Stanford University.
Curtis, a highly-exclusive conservatory in Philadelphia with a total student body of 174 students, had the same acceptance rate as Stanford: 5.1 percent. However, only 277 students applied to Curtis; 14 were admitted. Compare that to Stanford where 42,167 applied and 2,145 were admitted.
That's the word from StartClass, which compiled college application and admissions data from the National Center for Education Statistics, a division of the U.S. Department of Education. This data is for entering first-time, degree- and certificate-seeking students and does not include graduate or professional students.
