The Top 10 Favorite Children's Books

It's been sixty years, but it feels like a day, since "The Cat in the Hat" came to our house to play.

And as adults, we still remember how much we loved Sally and her brother's antics when the cat in a red-and-white striped hat arrived in their house on a cold, rainy day.

When the Harris Poll asked 2,193 adults to name their favorite childhood book--without prompting them with specific titles--"The Cat in the Hat," by Dr. Seuss was the No. 1 choice, followed by another Dr. Seuss classic, "Green Eggs and Ham." In addition, unspecific mentions of Dr. Seuss outpaced mentions of any single work he published.

The top 10 favorite children books:
1. "The Cat in the Hat," by Dr. Seuss

2. "Green Eggs and Ham," by Dr. Seuss

3. "Where the Wild Things Are," by Maurice Sendak

4. Nancy Drew mysteries, created by Edward Stratemeyer

5. The Bible/Bible stories

6. "Charlotte's Web," by E.B. White

7. "Goodnight Moon," by Margaret Wise Brown with illustrations by Clement Hurd and "Curious George," by Hans Augusto Rey and Margret Rey (tie)

9. "Little Women," by Louisa May Alcott and "The Giving Tree," by Shel Silverstein

Read, read, read to your children! As Dr. Seuss said, "Oh the places you'll go..."
