The devotion for the Virgin of Palm comes from the seventeenth century when a ship coming from Italy docked at Algeciras port to wait out bad weather. According to legend, once the crew of the ship removed a box with an image of the Virgin from its cargo the weather turned and the sea's tides were calmed.
