Zachary Quinto paranoid about privacy after filming Snowden

Zachary Quinto's newly acquired knowledge about rogue government surveillance has left him paranoid after filming movie Snowden.

Directed by Oliver Stone, Snowden is a biographical thriller which follows the story of Edward Snowden, the American computer professional who leaked classified information from the National Security Agency (NSA) without authorization in 2013.

He later fled to an undisclosed location in Russia, where he remains while seeking asylum elsewhere.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Edward in the film, while Zachary stars as Glenn Greenwald, one of the journalists who was given sensitive data.

Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday night (07Sep16), Zachary shared that through his research into Snowden’s controversial disclosures he has become worried about privacy issues.

“I learned to put some tape on my laptop camera,” he told Jimmy, adding that he carefully studied Glenn’s book on the subject and specifics as to how the NSA obtained information.

“That’s when you realize how sweeping and untargeted these intrusions are into our privacy really were.”

The 39-year-old went on to say he feels online privacy is an important topic, especially considering the forthcoming U.S. Presidential Election. And the Star Trek actor urged viewers to “brush up” on the Snowden controversy and take a position on the issue.

“I don’t want to be a paranoid person, but I do feel like part of what this issue allows us as Americans is to be responsible for our own constitutional right to privacy,” he said. “Because online privacy and cyberspace is kind of the next frontier of government, and unfortunately, of warfare.”

In a lighter moment in the interview, Zachary pointed to the laptop open on Jimmy’s desk, saying, “Someone could be watching us right now!” Of course, the TV host decided to have fun with the star, and joked, “A lot of people are watching us right now!”

He then feigned paranoia as he proceeded to halt the interview to cover up the television cameras in the studio.
