Thandie Newton pumped milk 'like a goat' on Westworld set
Thandie Newton hand-pumped breast milk between scenes while making Westworld for her driver to deliver to her babysitter.
The Crash actress began shooting the upcoming science-fiction thriller TV series, a remake of the 1973 film of the same name, while she was breastfeeding her third child, son Booker, in 2014.
In the show, she plays Maeve, a prostitute who works at a futuristic theme park called Westworld, which is filled with artificially intelligent androids.
Speaking about how she juggled filming and breastfeeding, the 43-year-old shared she would express milk by hand “like a lovely goat” between scenes and send it back to Booker via her driver.
“Into a bottle or bag,” she told The Guardian, gesturing squeezing with her hands. “Literally get your whole boob and milk yourself. And then I’d get my driver to drive it back to my babysitter.”
London-born Thandie appears nude in around 70 per cent of her scenes in Westworld. But as a new mom, the star turned down the offer to wear a wig over her private parts for the naked scenes, because it would force her to spend more time away from her son, who was six months old at the time.
“I was like: ‘No, no, no. I want to go back to my kid,” she adds. “It’s two hours extra in makeup to stick that thing on... Thankfully I’m not a woman who waxes everything off.”
Thandie, who also has two daughters Ripley and Nico from her marriage to Ol Parker, has appeared naked on screen before, but claims she felt liberated stripping off for Westworld because it was her decision and she didn’t feel forced to do it.
“It was the first time I felt in control of my body at work,” she explained.
Westworld, which also stars Anthony Hopkins, James Marsden and Evan Rachel Wood, premieres in October (16).
