Jack White plays first vinyl in space
Rocker Jack White has made history with his Third Man Records label by successfully playing the first vinyl record in outer space.
Carl Sagan's A Glorious Dawn became the label's three millionth record pressed and it was played on repeat on The iCarus Craft, a "space-proof" turntable, during a special event to mark the company's seventh anniversary on Saturday (30Jul16).
Jack personally helped to create The iCarus Craft with former NASA boffin Kevin Carrico and officials at the organization SATINS (Students and Teachers in Near Space), and he launched the vessel, which was attached to a high-altitude balloon, near Marsing, Idaho.
The record player reached an altitude of 94,413 feet (28,780 meters) after 81 minutes of flight time before the balloon burst, reports RollingStone.com. The turntable continued to spin even during its descent and after it landed in a vineyard.
"Our main goal from inception to completion of this project was to inject imagination and inspiration into the daily discourse of music and vinyl lovers," Jack said of the ground-breaking achievement. "Combining our creative impulses with those of discovery and science is our passion, and even on the scale that we are working with here, it was exhilarating to decide to do something that hasn't been done before and to work towards its completion.
"And, it brings us great fulfillment to pay tribute to the incredible scientist and dreamer that Carl Sagan was. We hope that in meeting our goal we inspire others to dream big and start their own missions, whatever they may be."
