Postman Pat star Ken Barrie dies

Ken Barrie, the original voice of beloved British children's TV favorite Postman Pat has died aged 83.

Ken passed away at his London home on Friday (29Jul16) after a short battle with cancer, his family told the BBC.

The voice actor and musician, who as well as playing the persistent postal worker appeared as many of the other characters in the animated series, enjoyed minor chart success as Pat.

He sung the show's theme tune, which was released as a single in 1982, and spent 15 weeks in the U.K. top 75.

Born Leslie Hulme in 1933, he also enjoyed a singing career in the 1960s under the name Les Carle.

Despite its subsequent popularity, only one series of the stop-motion animated show first produced by Woodland Animations was initially made in 1981, before Ken reprised the role 15 years later for a second series.

The show was rebooted in 2004 using computer generated animation, however Ken remained as Pat until handing over the reins to actor Lewis MacLeod.

He was also part of U.K. comedian Peter Kay's Animated All Star Band, recording the Official BBC Children in Need Medley, which topped the charts in 2009.

He is survived by his daughter Lorraine.
