The BFG towers over Star Trek at top of U.K. box office
The BFG has towered over its competitors and topped the U.K. box office chart.
Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Roald Dahl's tale, about an amiable giant who befriends a small girl, topped the U.K. chart by earning $6.95 million in its debut weekend in cinemas (22-24Jul16).
The film, which stars 2016 Oscar winner Mark Rylance in the title role, had underperformed earning expectations in North America, but proved a hit with British audiences.
In a surprising second place, after topping the equivalent U.S. box office chart, was Star Trek Beyond. The third movie in the rebooted science fiction franchise raked in $6.22 million on its opening weekend in U.K. theaters.
In third was a film of Dutch violin virtuoso Andre Rieu's concert in Maastricht, the Netherlands, with $1.85 million . Fourth was the new Ghostbusters reboot with takings of $1.73 million .
Rounding out the top five was animal animation Secret Life of Pets, which earned $1.59 million .
