GAZIANTEP, TURKEY - MAY 12: A computer screen shows a map of the area where 23 year-old Syrian Khalifa, was held by ISIL in 2014, on May 12, 2016 in Gaziantep, Turkey. Khalifa, who works as a writer/reporter and Syrian activist was arrested by ISIL soldiers and imprisoned for seven months in June 2014 for reporting from Raqqa. He managed to escape when he found the low security prison entrance was poorly guarded and he was able to escape one morning at dawn. During his time at the prison he was kept in a cell with 4-5 other prisoners and on numerous occasions was tortured, being hung by his hands for 4 -5 hours at a time. "I didn't see the sun for 7 months" he said. The prison he was held in is still operational and continues to house hundreds of prisoners. The war in Syria has created one of the worst refugee crises in recent history, with approximately 4.7 million Syrians fleeing their war-torn country for a safer life in the Middle East and Europe. For many refugees already suffering the consequences of civil war, the emergence of ISIL has made their lives even more precarious. (Photo by Chris McGrath/Getty Images)
