Suicide Squad on course to break August box office records in U.S.
Suicide Squad is on course to smash a few August records at the U.S. box office after a $20.5 million (GBP15.7 million) haul on Thursday night (04Aug16).
The film is also doing big business internationally, earning $29.6 million (GBP22.6 million) in its first two days and scoring the biggest opening day of all time in Russia.
David Ayer's all action comic book blockbuster is tracking to rake in over $130 million (GBP99 million) in America over the weekend, which will top all August film debuts, including Guardians of the Galaxy, which opened with $94.3 million (GBP72 million) in 2014.
Suicide Squad is making waves at the box office despite a critical mauling from reviewers, which has prompted Ayer and many of the film's stars to speak out.
Cara Delevingne came to the film's defense this week (beg01Aug16), accusing critics of not valuing superhero movies.
"The critics have been absolutely horrific," she told Reuters. "They're really, really horrible... It doesn't really matter what the critics say at the end of the day, it's the fans that we made this movie for."
Will Smith, who plays assassin Deadshot, echoes Cara's sentiments, saying, "I think people had expectations that may have been different, but I'm excited for the fans to get to vote," while castmate Margot Robbie adds, "Critical acclaim is really nice, but we made it for the fans. If the fans like it, then we did our job."
