FACTBOX-Policeman who shot black man in Charlotte is son of retired officer

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept 21 (Reuters) - Brentley Vinson, a black police officer, fatally shot a 43-year-old black man on Tuesday, in Charlotte, North Carolina, sparking a night of rioting in which 16 police were injured and one person arrested.

Here are some facts about Vinson:

- Vinson was placed on paid administrative leave after shooting Keith Lamont Scott, according to department protocol police said. Vinson has been employed with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department since July 21, 2014, and is currently assigned to the Metro Division.

- Vinson joined the department following in the footsteps of his father, Alex Vinson, who also worked there and has since retired, the Charlotte Observer newspaper reported.

- Police said Vinson was in plain clothes during the shooting and did not wear a body camera. Other officers in uniform at the scene had cameras but the department has not released video of the incident.

- Vinson previously played football for Liberty University, a fundamentalist Baptist school in Lynchburg, Virginia, the Charlotte Observer newspaper reported. Two former middle school and high school football coaches of Vinson's recalled him being a hard worker and leader, the newspaper reported.

- Liberty University said a Brent Vinson did attend school there, played football, and studied criminal justice but spokesman Len Stevens could not confirm the former student was the officer involved in the shooting. (Compiled by Curtis Skinner in San Francisco; Editing by Andrew Hay)
