Ohio sheriff indicted on tampering, prescription drug charges
Aug 23 (Reuters) - A northern Ohio sheriff was indicted on Tuesday on charges that he stole prescription drugs from disposal drop boxes, deceived medical professionals to get prescription medication and tampered with public records, the state's attorney general said.
A Sandusky County Grand Jury indicted Sandusky County Sheriff Kyle Overmyer, 42, on 38 felony and five misdemeanor charges, including counts of theft, tampering with records and deception to obtain a dangerous drug, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine said in a statement.
Overmyer was not immediately available for comment.
The state began investigating in 2015, when local authorities in Sandusky County "expressed concerns regarding alleged unusual behavior by Overmyer in prescription drug disposal drop box collections," DeWine said.
Overmyer is accused of stealing medications from area prescription drug disposal drop boxes, deceiving physicians and pharmacists in order to obtain prescription pain medication and improperly using and tampering with records, according to DeWine.
Overmyer was appointed sheriff in 2008 in the county about 35 miles (55 km) southeast of Toledo where he is up for re-election in November, according to local media. (Reporting By Brendan O'Brien; Editing by Richard Pullin)
