Spring roundup: Syndergaard K's seven straight

New York right-hander Noah Syndergaard struck out seven consecutive hitters on Thursday, but the Mets took an 8-5 setback against the Washington Nationals at West Palm Beach, Fla.

Syndergaard gave up just two hits in 3 1/3 scoreless innings in a dominating performance. He struck out the last three batters in the second, three straight in the third -- including Bryce Harper -- and the first batter in the fourth before being removed.

Matt Adams, who was Syndergaard's final strikeout victim, hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth inning for the Nationals. Miguel Montero also homered, and right-hander Stephen Strasburg gave up two runs and three hits and struck out five in 3 1/3 innings.

Pedro Florimon delivered the tiebreaking single in the eighth inning as Philadelphia defeated New York at Tampa, Fla. Didi Gregorius hit a two-run blast and Giancarlo Stanton had a two-run single for the Yankees.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 4-for-5 and scored twice, and Anthony Alford went 3-for-4 and scored three runs as Toronto defeated Baltimore at Sarasota, Fla. Andrew Susac hit a two-run blast for the Orioles.

Jose Martinez slugged a tying two-run homer in the seventh inning and Adolis Garcia supplied the tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the eighth as St. Louis edged Miami at Jupiter, Fla. Derek Dietrich, Braxton Lee and Tomas Telis each had two hits for the Marlins.

Astros 6, Braves 4

Jon Kemmer slugged a tiebreaking, two-run single in the top of the ninth inning as Houston knocked off Atlanta at Kissimmee, Fla. Charlie Culberson homered for the Braves.

Pirates 8, Tigers 3

David Freese homered and had three RBIs and Starling Marte and Bryce Brentz also went deep as Pittsburgh sailed past Detroit at Bradenton, Fla. Edwin Espinal had a two-run single for the Tigers.

Royals 12, White Sox (ss) 0

Jorge Soler slugged his fourth homer of the spring and Cody Asche and Samir Duenez hit solo blasts as Kansas City trounced Chicago at Glendale, Ariz. The White Sox were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

Diamondbacks 11, Brewers 6

Jake Lamb, Steven Souza Jr. and Rey Fuentes each homered to help Arizona knock off Milwaukee at Phoenix. Manny Pina hit two homers and had four RBIs, and Travis Shaw also went deep for the Brewers.

Athletics 7, Angels 3

Khris Davis lined a tiebreaking, two-run triple in the fifth inning to help Oakland defeat Los Angeles at Mesa, Ariz. Albert Pujols and Justin Upton had run-scoring singles for the Angels.

Cubs 10, Padres 4

Addison Russell and Javier Baez each drove in two runs as Chicago rolled past San Diego at Mesa, Ariz. Freddy Galvis and Travis Jankowski hit homers for the Padres.

Rangers 5, White Sox (ss) 4

Destin Hood slugged the tying homer in the seventh inning and Preston Beck hit the go-ahead blast in the eighth as Texas edged Chicago at Surprise, Ariz. Ryan Cordell went 3-for-3 and drove in all four runs for the White Sox.

Rockies 3, Reds 2

Sam Hilliard delivered the game-winning single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning as Colorado beat Cincinnati at Scottsdale, Ariz. Devin Mesoraco and Brandon Dixon had run-scoring singles for the Reds.

Red Sox 6, Rays 6

Boston's J.D. Martinez went 3-for-3 with an RBI double as the Red Sox and Tampa Bay played to a nine-inning tie at Fort Myers, Fla. Wilson Ramos and Mallex Smith each had two-run doubles for the Rays.
