Carol Burnett and Julie Andrews caught 'kissing' by former U.S. First Lady

Carol Burnett was left embarrassed when she was caught jokingly kissing Julie Andrews by former First Lady Byrd Johnson.

The actresses were staying in the same hotel after traveling to Washington, D.C. to perform for former U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson in the 1960s, and Julie invited Carol to join her for some hot chocolate.

As they were hanging out, they came up with an idea to prank late director Mike Nichols, who was also staying at the same hotel, but the stunt didn't go as planned.

"So she called (my suite) and she said, 'Carol, (my husband) Tony and I are having some hot chocolate, why don't you come down and have some hot chocolate...?' I said, 'OK," Burnett recalled on America's Watch What Happens: Live! on Thursday (15Sep16). "So the phone rang in her suite and it was Mike Nichols, the director, he had just checked in, and she said, 'Come on down, we're all having hot chocolate,' and he said, 'OK, I'll be down'."

"We're sitting there and Julie looks at me and says, 'I know what we should do... when we know Mike is coming down, let's be kissing'," she continued. "I said, 'Julie, I love you a whole lot, but (I don't know).' And she said, 'We'll just look like we're kissing...,' I said, 'OK.' So we see (the elevator count down from the fourth floor) and we start '(kissing)' and nothing. Then we look up and out walked (President Johnson's wife), Lady Byrd. She said, 'Are you Carol Burnett?' and I said, 'Yes ma'am and this is Mary Poppins'."
