America Ferrera attends Emmys after first triathlon

Actress America Ferrera prepared for the Primetime Emmy Awards by completing her first triathlon on Saturday (17Sep16).

The former Ugly Betty star was one of the hundreds of athletes participating in the Nautica Malibu Triathlon in Malibu, California on Saturday (17Sep16), when she took on the strenuous challenge of a half mile (0.8 kilometer) swim, an 18 mile (28.9 kilometer) bicycle course, and a four mile (6.4 kilometer) run.

America, 32, had been training for months for the race, and she took to Instagram to post a video of herself crossing the finish line, writing the caption, "I did it!!!!!!!!! My time was really 3:42!! So much better than I expected!"

A little more than 24 hours later, the actress got glammed up for the Emmys, and couldn't help but gush about her big accomplishment to E!.

"I just did my first triathlon yesterday. And I survived!" she gushed. "It was incredible. I'm as proud of committing to it and doing it and accomplishing as I am just about anything I've done in my life. It was incredible."

She continued, "I'm just so grateful for my body and how healthy it is, how strong it is, and that I am able. That was my one main thought was, 'I'm so grateful that I'm able to do this."

America decided to sign up for the triathlon after her close friend competed in the event to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, in honor of her mom, who passed away from Lymphoma.

The actress explained, "Watching my friend's journey was incredible, and many family and friends of mine have suffered through cancer, so doing it for a bigger cause was also incredibly inspiring and kept my head in the right space."

America wasn't the only celebrity who competed in the Malibu race - actor James Marsden also took on the challenge, while Zac Efron was cheering on his young brother Dylan from Malibu's Zuma Beach.
