Robert De Niro's London hotel given the go-ahead

Officials in London have given Robert De Niro the greenlight to move forward with plans to develop a luxury hotel in the heart of the city.

The Taxi Driver star has teamed up with bosses at BD Hotels to develop the 83-room Wellington Hotel in Covent Garden.

The hotel, which is expected to open in 2019, will feature a spa, restaurant, private members' club and a retail space.

"London is one of the most exciting and cosmopolitan cities in the world," the actor said in May (16). "It makes perfect sense to develop a hotel that represents all of that in the heart of this city in Covent Garden.

"The Wellington Hotel will honor the heritage of the area, while bringing the best of what we've done in New York to London."

This isn't the 73-year-old's first foray in the hotel business - in 2008, he opened the Greenwich Hotel in New York, which is home to his Tribeca film festival.

He also developed the Nobu hotel in Manila, Philippines.
