Bryan Adams raises £10,000 for cancer-stricken fan at concert
Bryan Adams helped to raise £10,000 ($12,900) for a young cancer-stricken fan after passing round a collection bin at one of his concerts.
The 56-year-old Canadian rocker passed round a huge grey bin during his show at Kent County Cricket Club's ground in Canterbury, England, on Saturday (13Aug16) in aid of 16-year-old Kelly Turner.
The teenager, from Canterbury, was diagnosed with an aggressive and rare desmoplastic small round cell tumor in October (15), and doctors told Kelly and her devastated family she had two years to live.
Kelly, who was at the gig on Saturday, wants to raise 1 million ($1.3 million) for life-saving surgery at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
Bryan got his fans to pass the bin, which had Kelly's name on the side, round the crowd at The Spitfire Ground, and in minutes it was filled with cash and coins amounting to roughly 10,000 ($12,900), British newspaper the Daily Mirror reports.
The rocker took to Instagram after his gig on Saturday, and shared a photo of the bin filled with money. "People power!" he captioned the shot. "Last night we did something different at the Canterbury concert.
"We passed a bin around between the audience and the band, and spontaneously raised around 10,000 for 16-year-old Kelly Turner who is suffering from a rare form of cancer.
"The bin came back twice. I'm so proud of the audience tonight. Special thanks to the security at the gig who volunteered to go into the crowd and follow the collection." He also included a link to Kelly's Just Giving page, and encouraged his followers to donate.
The teenager, who had a song dedicated to her during the gig, later thanked the singer for his fundraising efforts. "I'm amazed by the kindness and donations we received today at the Bryan Adams' concert," she said. "My heart is warm with love. Thank you Bryan Adams."
The rock star's charitable fundraising comes after Kelly's family were heartbroken following the theft of a collection box for the cancer-stricken teenager.
Local police are investigating the incident where woman and a young boy, believed to be her son, stole the box containing roughly 65, from a shop near the Turner family's home town of Dover, Kent.
