Seth Rogen only cut a second of footage from Sausage Party to score R rating
Seth Rogen was stunned when movie censors allowed him and business partner Evan Goldberg to get away with a host of naughty bits in their new R-rated animated film Sausage Party.
The duo followed Team America: World Police's Trey Parker and Matt Stone's example and crammed their film with jokes and innuendos they felt the watchdogs would never allow, in the hope of persuading them to let them keep other stuff.
But the censors had no problems with the footage they saw and in the end, they insisted Seth and Evan cut less than a second of footage to get their R rating.
"It's like when you're buying a car and you give a really low-ball offer, expecting to work up to what the actual number is," Seth told Any Given Wednesday show host Bill Simmons. "That's what we did and they kinda accepted our low-ball offer with a shockingly small amount of negotiation.
"We put in probably, like, five seconds of stuff that we were like, 'OK, here's some stuff that we could easily lose and it won't, we think, (affect the finished film)'."
Of the South Park creators' influence, Seth continued, "It's (strategy) all based on Team America... We love those guys (Parker and Stone) and we just tried to do exactly what they did (in 2004)... In the end we ultimately took out around 18 frames. There's 24 frames to a second of movie, so it's less than a second of stuff, and we got our R-rating!"
The rude and raucous Sausage Party hits U.S. cinemas on Friday (12Aug16) and features the voices of Rogen, Michael Cera, James Franco, Bill Hader, and Salma Hayek as a lesbian taco.
