Kate del Castillo wants El Chapo investigation to be dropped

Kate del Castillo is seeking a court injunction which forces prosecutors to charge her or close their investigation over her meetings with drug lord El Chapo.

The Mexican actress met with the criminal, full name Joaquin Guzman, the head of criminal organization the Sinaloa Cartel, about developing a possible movie biopic while he was on the run. Their correspondence came under scrutiny after she helped set up a meeting between Guzman and actor Sean Penn for a Rolling Stone article, which was published in January (16), the day after Guzman was recaptured.

The actress was put under criminal investigation by Mexican Attorney General Arely Gomez on allegations of obstruction of justice and money laundering, claims she denies, but no charges have been filed.

A Mexican judge agreed to put pressure on prosecutors to charge her with a crime or drop the case in July (16), and del Castillo has now filed her own legal papers seeking a court injunction for the same matter.

"The Mexican Attorney General's office has constantly violated her rights to due process by leaking information of the investigation to the media, and violating her presumption of innocence," her representative told the Associated Press on Tuesday (02Aug16).

Mexican officials claim they have attempted to question the actress but she has remained in the U.S., where she is a naturalised citizen. Her lawyer says she has nothing to hide and is willing to talk to authorities.
