As the city brothels lost business, many of the sex workers were pushed out to areas outside the city on August 25, 2016 outside Samarinda, Kalimantan, Indonesia. Indonesia's East Kalimantan was reported to be one of the worst affected province when coal prices dropped from a high of over USD 127.05 per metric ton in 2011 to the current price of around USD 50 per metric ton in August 2016. Commodity-rich towns in Kalimantan, the world's largest exporter of thermal coal, were hit hard when coal mining companies ceased operations which created a lack of job opportunities and severe social implications, such as an increase in drug abuse and prostitution, as miners found difficulties in finding job opportunities. As the number of unemployment rises in coal mines at parts of Indonesia, both foreign and local workers return home leaving some villages with 50 percent less population leaving abandoned housing and infrastructures while construction sites have been left delayed or cancelled.
