Oklahoma mother charged with using crucifix to kill 'possessed' daughter

A 49-year-old Oklahoma woman has been charged with first-degree murder on suspicion of killing her daughter whom she thought was possessed by the devil by jamming a crucifix down her throat and beating her, court records released on Tuesday showed. Juanita Gomez was booked last week in the death of Geneva Gomez, whose body was found in an Oklahoma City home with a large cross on her chest, a probable cause affidavit said.

Competitors slip and slide for gravy wrestling championships

Men and women wrestlers wearing fancy dress tackled a slippery surface for a somewhat unusual contest on Monday - the "World Gravy Wrestling Championships." Cheered on by spectators, contestants from all over Britain slid in the gooey mixture, usually an accompaniment to Sunday roast meals, as they wrestled each other on a padded gravy pool at the Rose 'n' Bowl pub in Lancashire, England in a bid to raise money for a local hospice.

A curious radio signal picked up by a Russian telescope is probably not a transmission from an extraterrestrial civilization, but astronomers in California are taking a second look anyway, the SETI Institute said on Tuesday. A group of Russian astronomers last year detected what appeared to be a non-naturally occurring radio signal in the general location of a star system 94 light-years from Earth.

Peru's president says local people do not get his 'English humor'

After upsetting lawmakers and a senior church leader with comments that have triggered chuckles and raised eyebrows, Peru's new president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski has observed that Peruvians do not get his "English humor." Kuczynski, a 77-year-old former investment banker who studied in Britain in the 1950s, took office in Peru in July.
