| Access from New York The New York legislature recently passed a new state law intended to ensure that New York residents who use the Internet via a dial-up telephone connection have adequate warning that some phone numbers provided for their Internet connection may not be within the user's local calling area.
In New York state, local access numbers for CompuServe are provided in the following area codes: 212, 315, 347, 516, 518, 585, 607, 631, 646, 716, 718, 845, 914, & 917 . CompuServe dial-up access numbers within these area codes can be selected using the "Access Numbers" button on the sign-on screen of your CompuServe software.
If you have selected a CompuServe dial-up access number in any of these area codes, we urge you to review the following information, which we are required to provide you by New York law:
WARNING: THE USE OF SOME OF THE FOLLOWING TELEPHONE NUMBERS MAY RESULT IN LONG DISTANCE CHARGES. IN SELECTING YOUR ACCESS NUMBER(S), PLEASE NOTE THAT ALTHOUGH AN ACCESS NUMBER MAY BE IN YOUR AREA CODE OR LOCATED IN YOUR GENERAL GEOGRAPHIC REGION, IT MAY NOT NECESSARILY BE A LOCAL NUMBER FOR YOU. YOU MAY INCUR SUBSTANTIAL TELEPHONE CHARGES IF YOU CHOOSE ACCESS NUMBERS THAT ARE NOT COVERED BY YOUR LOCAL CALLING PLAN.
WE URGE YOU TO CHECK WITH YOUR TELEPHONE COMPANY TO FIND OUT WHICH NUMBERS ARE LOCAL FOR YOU BEFORE USING A NUMBER FROM THIS LIST.
Please note that if you do not contact your local phone company, you may unnecessarily incur phone charges when dialing a CompuServe access number. Only your local phone company can ensure that the access number that you select is local to you.
