momma turned eighteen today
by d. brown

It seemed just like yesterday
when my life was just a normal everday
I was looking for my break out of highschool
look'n to blow this everyday, listen to nobody's rule
but it happened in a blink of an eye
couldn't understand why momma had to cry
she said "Life sometimes isn't planned
you just have to know when to take a stand
i thought i knew her every joy and doubt, thought i knew her inside and out
didn't know what this was all about
i found that momma turned eighteen that day.

eighteen is young and free
never needing anyone just me
running with my friends
on a road that never ends
singing loud and clear
drinking kegs of beer
strolling across the sand
cruising up the Grand
dancing under moonlight
on a starry night
momma turned eighteen today.

she said that 21 years was way to long
to live a life that went way to wrong
she shook her head and turned to walk away
said she could no longer stay
said that daddy didn't know how to care for her
lost his love when, she wasn't sure
hoped that she could cure
the distance between two
who knew nothing of how to see things through
she said i love you
maybe that's true
but momma turned eighteen that day.
