Poetry: Unrequited Love
My Cigarette and I
by Peter

Sitting in my mouth
Sitting in the yard
Lately, I’ve been thinking hard
Slowed a bit, by puffy dreams
Scared a bit, by bygone screams
Whenever I smoke I find the future irrelevant
Only the past flushes through my hollow head
Selective memories I resurrect, the rest remain solemnly dead
Of course you, come up in a wisp
Running circles in my mind, hiding under rocks I can never find
You, and you and you, and yes you
You and not me, I’m still lonely and "free"
So now that idealism has run out, even the tortured do not shout
I sit here; as she sits in mouth, both of us burning away quietly waiting for another day
