Poetry: Unrequited Love
What I Live For
by Lesley Ann Huggins

You sit there
You laugh and smile,
You lift one eyebrow
In that distinct style.
I stand and gaze down at you.
My breathing becomes shallow
And fast paced too.
I wonder if you see?
I wonder if you know?
How intensely I feel
Or how deep it goes.
Can’t you see it in my eyes?
For a long time now
They’ve refused to hide.

Like a thief in the night,
I pilfer small moments
When the timing is right;
To study your face
Even more in detail,
To touch your hair or your skin
That makes me giddy within.
On those rare instants
When you’re in my arms,
Order’s restored, I’m mentally calm.
I exhale and hold you close.
That’s what I live for the most.
