don't forget
by Julian
when you're old and your heart is dreary
when your hands are brittle
and your gaze is weary
when time has washed you're beauty away
and youth long since belongs to yesterday
if all you see is what you lack
take this poem and travel back
think of days of wonder and of magic
think of love, however perfect, however tragic
remember all the men you attracted
and how ridiculous many acted
can you still remember living for today
and all the nice things people would say?
try and recall all the compliments you would get
and all the men who promised to never forget
to never forget what true love really meant
never stop treasuring every minute with you spent
and if you can, love them all
love the short, love the fat
love the skinny and love the tall
love every last one of them, please do
and maybe you'll remember this one too
and if that happens to be the case
if you can still make out my face
then do me a favor:
given that I'm still around
still somewhere remote to be found
if I'm still alive at all
well, then feel free to give me a call
a grumpy old man I'll be by then
a complete minger on a scale from one to ten
but if I can still think straight I'll surely rejoice
to pick up the phone and hear your voice
hello my darling you'll cheerfully say
how are you doing today?
I couldn't be better I'll reply
maybe I'm too young to die
and I'll surely invite you to a cup of tea or two
and we'll discuss all that life has put us through
