Poetry: Special Days
Venus and her Flytrap
by Allan W. Traphagan

I left for California to sell Bicycles on the beach,
I was killing myself in the poisonous factories of
the middlewest and dodging bullets nightly on the
way home.

In a Burger King in San Diego, I spun the wheel of
success in my head, click, clicking, visions of an
aquamarine ocean slipping me through green glass,
tunnels that rolled with frothy, white crests.

That's when She flew in from the dusty street
and settled down on the seat beside me.

From her purse she transformed herself into a
shining star, and her radiation was my destiny.

At night, she locks me in this animal thing,
and feeds me Pizza, singing paralyzing siren songs.

Tearfully....I watch the squealing Seagulls peck at the rocking cradle, drifting away in the cold, blue sea.
