My Mothers Hands
by Ryan Marie Hollinger
All my life I wondered
But could never understand
Why, when I thought of my Mom
All I ever saw was her hands
Just the other day
I figured it out
Who would've guessed it would come
From my own daughter's mouth
She wanted me to follow her
But I can't remember where
Some amazing new discovery
That she just HAD to share
Her little hand reached for mine
And this is what she said:
"Gimme hand, Mommy!"
And suddenly hers were in my head
I remember holding her hand
Walking along her side
I remember them holding me
Calming me when I cried
They were always done up
Perfectly painted everyday
Decorated in 10k gold
Never anything fake
I always thought they were beautiful
Her best feature I guess
I know all this sounds weird
But I hope it makes sense
Her hands healed me and comforted me
Pointed the way when I couldn't see
Often they would save me, catch me
And help me to my feet
As a mother myself
I finally understand
Just how much I relied
On my Mothers hand
