The Birthday Wish

The Birthday Wish
Today is your birthday,
Many other’s birthday too.
But of those many birthdays,
I chose to rhyme for you.
When a cake is placed before you,
"Now make a wish," they say,
Most don’t take it seriously,
And they lose a chance that day.
I once asked a 16 year old,
Who had a birthday on this day.
I asked her what she wished for,
What did she wish for you say?
She looked me in the eye,
Then quickly to the floor.
Her lip began to quiver,
Her eyes darted to the door.
"You ask me this question,
I will tell you for time has come to call,
But first I must tell you,
I’m not like you at all!
All I wanted was a mother,
One who cared at that.
One who would have tucked me in,
Next to me she would have sat.
One to call me sweetheart,
And take me here and there.
One to love me no matter what,
And to tell me that she cared.
My birthday past,
She hadn’t noticed.
I’m really not surprised,
At times, I wonder if my mother even cries.
For a mother like yours,
You have it all.
She not only answers it,
But she awaits your call."
That was her wish,
We all have different dreams.
Mine is nothing like hers,
Because I already have it, it seems.
Today is your birthday,
You own the candy dish.
So I have only one question,
What is your birthday wish??
