Barbed Wire and Blue Eyes
by Ruth Shea
Barbed Wire and Blue Eyes
I saw him before
I walked inside that room
I stood with trepidation
Against the wall –
Did he even want to see me?
I didn’t know
What am I doing here,
Trapped between
Barbed wire and blue eyes.
He sat at the table,
Handcuffs bound his wrists –
His hand, that I once
Held in mine,
I couldn’t even touch.
I couldn’t hold him –
Oh, to take him in my arms,
That suddenly ached
For his warm and tender touch.
And his eyes,
Bright blue eyes that reached
Inside and touched my soul –
His gaze, now fixed upon me,
Taking my heart and holding it fast.
I wondered, how long it takes
To fall into those eyes –
Even though you know before you fall,
There’s no way out.
But then, I remember
It’s the choice we make
When we get too close…
To barbed wire and blue eyes.
