How Long to Grieve?

Q: How long do I wait after my wife died to start seeking companionship? The loss was great (31 years married), but the loneliness is even greater. -- Neal, 58

Dr. Susan: There are no rules about grieving. You can expect that your grieving will slowly fade over time, regardless of when you date to alleviate your loneliness. "Rebound" relationships after a long marriage are pretty common, and they can work if no one rushes to make a new commitment too soon. In other words, don't latch onto just anyone so you don't have to come home to an empty house. But it's fine to seek out women to spend time with. You'll know when you're comfortable making a longer-term connection.
