Can Love Come After Sex?

Q: A friend of mine has roommates, one of whom has a brother who is often there visiting, as am I. One night we started talking, and one thing led to another and we were making out. This has happened maybe three or four times. One time he approached the question of a relationship, but I don't know what I should do. I like him and all, but could a relationship last if it starts with sex? -- Deanna, 21

Dr. Susan: You can certainly give a relationship a chance if you like him. Get to know him, and put the physical stuff aside for a while so you can stay alert to what kind of person he is. Plenty of relationships start out in a physical way, and some of them have staying power. Some, of course, last longer than they otherwise would, due to hormones taking charge of the decision-making. If you don't choose to proceed with dating him away from your friend's apartment, then maybe you ought to consider eliminating the make-out sessions too. It's really up to you.
