An Old Love

Q: How do I get my old girlfriend back? We both are not dating anyone right now, and for the past eight years I always wanted another shot. I have been trying to ask her out and stuff, but my advances kinda get laughed off. -- Steve, 48

Dr. Susan: I figure that after eight years, she's moved on emotionally and has a better idea of what she wants out of life and out of a partner. If she had any remaining interest in you, she would take your advances seriously. I'm sure she doesn't want to hurt your feelings, but it doesn't sound as if she's still longing for another shot at you. All you can do is be upfront about your interest, ask her out for a coffee date or whatever, and if she laughs it off, ask her if you should quit asking.
