What's Behind Door #2?

Q: I've been in a relationship for almost a year with a nice girl but, I met someone recently whom really piqued my interest. I want to honor my current relationship, but I really am curious about this other person. What do I do? -- Ben, 32

Dr. Susan: If your curiosity is insistent, it might be a good idea to see what you can find out about this other person without breaking any vows or understandings you have with your current girlfriend. Although you've been in this relationship for a year, it doesn't sound as though you're in love or anywhere near making a commitment. What you need to realize is that there are always going to be women who pique your interest, but that doesn't mean you dump the one you're with. If the only way to satisfy your curiosity is to date the new person, then you absolutely owe it to your girlfriend to let her know that you're unsure enough of your relationship with her that you want to date others for a while. She'll probably be devastated, but not quite as devastated as finding out you've been cheating on her.
