The 3 Worst Shoes You Can Wear It's not just stilettos that can wreck your feet. It's also sandals and slippers.
And while an occasional night out on the town in those sexy heels won't cripple you for life, wearing stilettos day in and day out--as well as sandals and slippers--could set you up for foot pain later in life. The study: HealthDay News reports that researchers from Boston University School of Public Health and the Institute for Aging Research at Hebrew SeniorLife analyzed data from 1,900 women and 1,472 men enrolled in the Framingham Foot Study between 2002 and 2008. Each participant was queried about pain, aching or stiffness in either or both feet, and everyone provided information about current and past footwear. The team classified footwear worn by the participants into these three groups: - Good: low-risk shoes, including athletic and casual sneakers.
- Average: mid-risk shoes, such as hard-soled or rubber-soled shoes, special shoes and work boots.
- Poor: high-risk shoes that lack support and sound structure, such as high-heeled shoes, sandals and slippers.
The results: About one-quarter of the participants said they had generalized foot pain on most days, with 19 percent of men and 29 percent of women falling into this category, notes HealthDay News. Women especially had an increased risk of heel pain caused by shoes. Since only 2 percent of the men wore poor shoes, the shoe type wasn't a major factor in the development of foot pain in men. What can women do to prevent foot pain? In addition to making more careful choices of shoe type, women can do foot stretching exercises to help alleviate the painful effect of high heels. The study appears in the journal Arthritis Care & Research. --From the Editors at Netscape
