RSS Frequently Asked Questions
What is RSS?
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds deliver constantly updated headlines and links back to discussions in Forums and Communities.
Where are the RSS links for communities?
The RSS links you need are in the left and right columns on this page. Depending on the browser or reader you utilize you may need to click on the community link or copy and paste the community.
What are the benefits of using RSS?
RSS is an easy way to keep up with your favorite Forums and Communities without having to visit them individually. A list of recent discussions are delivered to your RSS reader that lets you scan the headlines and jump into the discussion with a single click.
CNET offers a more detailed overview of what RSS is all about.
What do I need to use RSS?
You need a special news reader or aggregator that collects and displays RSS feeds from your favorite Forums and Communities, as well as Websites. There are three varieties of RSS readers: 1) standalone programs that run on their own; 2) plug-ins that work inside your Web browser; and 3) Web-based readers that do not need any special program or plug-in.
Where do I get a reader and how much does it cost?
There are dozens of RSS readers available. CNET reviewed five of the most popular ones. The best part? Most of them are free!
- Netscape Browser Version 8, for example, comes with a built-in, customizable RSS reader.
- My AOL Feeds (Beta) lets you use your existing Screen Name to create your own Web-based RSS reader.
- FeedDemon, offered through Wugnet, is a highly customizable RSS reader packed with powerful options that are easy to use.
What about other Web browsers?
Firefox, Maxthon and many other browsers have built-in RSS readers. If you have questions about setting up RSS feeds in these browsers, consult the documentation that came with your browser or ask the staff members in your favorite Forums and Communities.
Do Community RSS Feeds Work With Macs?
Yes, keeping up with your favorite Forums and Communities is just as easy and convenient on Macs. Many OS X Web browsers, like Safari, Firefox, OmniWeb, and Opera, have built-in RSS readers. In Tiger (10.4), you can also install a free RSS newsreader widget for your Dashboard. Highly acclaimed and its Lite version are standalone RSS readers with powerful functions.
Web-based RSS readers like MyAOL Feeds (Beta) are, of course, compatible with most current Mac Web browsers.
How often are the RSS feeds updated?
In some RSS readers, you can customize how often the reader retrieves new feeds. Forum and Community RSS feeds are updated hourly.
