Kathy Bates honored with star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

Kathy Bates has received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The Oscar-winning actress was joined by Shirley MacLaine and Billy Bob Thornton as she had her star unveiled on Tuesday (20Sep16) outside the former Grauman's Chinese Theater in Los Angeles.

Bates, who became a household name after her acclaimed performance in the adaptation of Stephen King's Misery in 1990, received the 2,589th star on Hollywood Boulevard.

During her speech, Bates recalled how she had visited Grauman's Chinese Theater around 60 years ago with her sister Mary and Aunt Lee.

"We were going to see The King and I, and then 34 years later I came back to this very theater with another King by the name of Stephen, with a movie called Misery that changed my life," she told the crowd.

The 68-year-old has had a sterling career, with best supporting actress Oscar nominations for Primary Colors and About Schmidt, as well as 14 Emmy nominations.

She won the Oscar for Best Actress in 1991 for her role as Annie Wilkes in Misery, the terrifying former nurse who kidnaps her idol and author Paul Sheldon, played by James Caan, and keeps him prisoner in her home.

Maclaine, who was at the ceremony to support Bates, praised her friend's gift.

"I am so honored to be here to extol your talent," she said.

Bates' most recent roles have been in Ryan Murphy's series American Horror Story, with her performance as bearded lady Ethel Darling landing her an Emmy nod in 2014.

Her other movie credits include Titanic, Fried Green Tomatoes and Midnight in Paris. She is also set to appear in the upcoming sequel Bad Santa 2, alongside Thornton.
