Angelina Jolie files for divorce from Brad Pitt

Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce to end her two-year marriage to Brad Pitt.

The actress filed legal documents on Monday (19Sep16), citing irreconcilable differences, according to TMZ. She's asking for physical custody of the couple's six children.

Jolie, who lists the date of separation as 15 September (16), has hired top divorce lawyer Laura Wasser to represent her.

She is not asking for spousal support, according to the documents obtained by TMZ, and she has asked the judge to give Pitt visitation.

Reports suggest there was no third party involved in the marriage breakdown.

Jolie's attorney, Robert Offer, has confirmed the news, revealing the actress has filed for "dissolution of marriage", adding the decision was made for "the health of the family".

"She will not be commenting, and asks that the family be given its privacy at this time," Offer added in a statement.

And the 41-year-old's manager Geyer Kosinski also insists the actress is focusing on her children, writing in a statement to E! News, "Angelina is doing what's best in the interest of taking care of her children. She appreciates everyone's understanding of their need for privacy at this time."

The couple met on the set of action film Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2003, when Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston.

"Because of the film, we ended up being brought together to do all these crazy things, and I think we found this strange friendship and partnership that kind of just suddenly happened," Jolie told Vogue magazine in 2006, shortly after the couple became an item. "Anything we had to do with each other, we just found a lot of joy in it together and a lot of real teamwork. We just became kind of a pair."

Jolie and Pitt wed at Chateau Miraval in the south of France in 2014.

In recent years the demands of their Hollywood careers and Angelina's extensive humanitarian work have kept them apart for long periods of time, but last year (15) they teamed up to make By the Sea, a movie about an unhappily married couple. Their last official appearance together was at the premiere of the film in November (15).

Their last reported appearance together in public was at a restaurant in West Hollywood in July (16), just before their second wedding anniversary, when they met for a family breakfast in celebration of the eighth birthdays of twins Knox and Vivienne.

Neither Jolie, Pitt, nor their representatives have commented on the divorce news.
