Emeli Sande dealt with marriage breakdown in new song
Emeli Sande put off dealing with the pain of her marriage breakdown until she wrote her new single Hurts.
The Read All About It singer's hugely successful debut album Our Version of Events earned her two Brit Awards and an invitation to sing for President Barack Obama at the White House. She took a four-year break from music before returning with new single Hurts which documents the pain she felt after divorcing her childhood sweetheart, marine biologist Adam Gouraguine in 2013. The pair was married for just a year.
"I mean, this was the only relationship I'd ever experienced," she explained to BBC Radio 4's Front Row show. "So to finally be without him and without the relationship in my life, it took a lot of adjusting."
Emeli took a long hiatus before reemerging with the emotionally charged new single which she revealed in the new interview was the first time she allowed herself to acknowledge her marriage breakdown.
"Even just a small thing like learning how to handle myself in the real world. It was like a crash course in life," the singer shared. "The shock of it all made me forget about the emotion for a while - put it off, put it off, put it off.
"So Hurts came when I felt a bit more stable and ready to face it. This was the first time I addressed it within myself."
The Clown singer admits the end of her one-year marriage was mainly responsible for her long break, but she’s now back with new music, and her second album Long Live the Angels is due out in November (16).
"I had to get myself to a state of full confidence, full energy before coming back." she smiled. "This life, and the choice to be an artist, does take sacrifice. It affects everything. Your relationships, your mentality, your spirit."
