Neil Young pens new song for pipeline protest

Veteran rocker Neil Young has written a new song backing protesters against an oil pipeline set to run through North and South Dakota.

The 70-year-old musician has released a song titled Indian Givers, alongside a video including footage of recent protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline which have seen large numbers of activists arrested.

Neil, who has penned a number of protest songs throughout his 50 year music career, has included lyrics about the ongoing unrest around the oil project, which goes through Standing Rock Native American reservation.

The song particularly lauds Native American protester Dale 'Happy' American Horse Jr., a protester who was arrested after chaining himself to an excavator in a bid to prevent work going ahead.

"Saw Happy locked to the big machine," Neil sings in the song. "They had to cut him loose and you know what that means. That's when Happy went to jail. Behind big money justice always fails."

Neil was also a prominent campaigner against the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline, teaming with Willie Nelson on the song Who's Gonna Stand Up?, written in protest at the since rejected 2014 plans to expand the pipeline.
