O.J. Simpson attorney Christopher Darden glad Sterling K. Brown won Emmy
O.J. Simpson attorney Christopher Darden is glad Sterling K. Brown won an Emmy for portraying him on the small screen.
Brown took home the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie on Sunday (19Sep16), and the one person he said he wouldn't be calling with news of his victory was Darden himself.
According to the actor, he tried to get in contact with the 60-year-old attorney as he prepared to take on the role of the famed O.J. Simpson prosecutor before filming The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, but Darden "respectfully declined".
However, Darden recalls Brown reached out to him at around 3am one morning, and woke him from his sleep.
"It was kind of weird actually," he told Entertainment Tonight. "It was 3 o'clock in the morning. I was concerned about my parents that night.
"I thought, when the phone rang, there was a problem, but it was just Sterling K. Brown."
Despite refusing to contact him following the early hour phone call, the former prosecutor said he was "very happy" for Brown's triumph, adding, "I knew he was going to get nominated and I knew he would win."
"It's a tremendous thing after all of these years, for an actor to play me and do a great job!" Darden continued. "He must have done a great job because he beat John Travolta! I'm really happy for him. Last night I took a shot of tequila for you, Sterling."
Darden also admitted he had actively avoided connecting with Brown for fear of bringing up the terrible memories he has of the now infamous trial of former sportsman Simpson, who was found not guilty of the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman.
"For me, it was a hugely negative life experience. For me to have to revisit it, it really drags me to a very dark and angry place," he shared. "I don't want to go back to 1995. And I don't want to feel the way I felt in 1995."
While Darden declined to connect with Brown, the legal eagle's daughter Jenee helped the actor get into character and the pair are now close friends. However, the attorney and author is unhappy with one aspect of their budding friendship.
"The only thing I don’t like is when she calls him her TV dad. That part I'm not happy about," he said.
Now Brown is a "big shot Hollywood actor, Emmy-award winning actor,” Darden said he would take Brown's call, as long as it's "during the daylight hours."
