"Dexter" recently returned for a fourth season in which blood-spatter expert and serial killer, Dexter, is settling into domestic life as a new husband and father. The actress, Julie Benz, who plays his wife and the mother of his child, says she has grown to love her own character Rita Bennet more and more as the Showtime series has continued.
"There's a couple of things I love about playing her. One of them is that eventually, the truth will probably come out. I wonder how she's going to handle that," notes Benz of her character not knowing that Dexter is a serial killer.
"In today's world, we see so many people become jaded because of the experiences they've gone through. She's a woman who's been severely damaged by another man -- beaten and raped on a daily basis by her ex-husband -- and yet she still believes in love and she still believes in the good in people," explains the actress.
"I also love that through her relationship with Dexter, she's become a much stronger woman, so it's been nice to see her grow. I think she has found happiness with Dexter. The question is, has Dexter found true happiness with her? She views him as a very gentle spirit and a loving man. She obviously doesn't know the dark side."
The show has already been renewed for a fifth season, so the foundation is already being laid in order for her to find out. In the meantime, Benz and her co-stars are working hard to keep audiences guessing.
"We get to go to work everyday and have amazing dialogue among these really great actors. We continually keep our game up because we know what a gift the show really is. It's like nothing else on television."
